Ballet helps building fundamental physical capabilities for rhythmic gymnasts, including developing the upright posture, arms and feet positions, gaining strength and improving necessary muscles.
Beautiful posture, proper shape of feet and graceful movements are the result of hard work at the ballet barre. In addition, choreography lessons include jumps, turns, balances and their combinations, which are the basis of ballet and rhythmic gymnastics.
When the gymnast understands basic moves that allows her to do more complicated elements and understand their mistakes. Even if a gymnast is very flexible and stretched, it doesn’t allow her to do complex ballet moves perfectly. Gymnasts should control their body and muscles in order to be able to perform quick movements, jumps and battements. This control can be achieved through the ballet. Only complete body control allows a gymnast to take the right position, feeling every muscle, and perform good rotations even with the apparatus.
Rhythmic gymnastics’ judging rules refer to scores for artistry. Ballet and choreography exercises help demonstrating all beautiful positions without hesitation. Therefore, the right posture trained in choreography lessons helps gymnasts not only to do various elements, but also feel how to work with apparatus whilst doing these elements. Moves learned at choreography lessons can be further used in exercises with apparatus.
In regular ballet classes, only work at the ballet bar and middle exercises are required. However, ballet classes specifically designed for rhythmic gymnasts comprise of tailored ballet elements for the gymnasts. Ballet lessons help develop the right landing from leaps, through the balls of feet. Only then should you do high jumps. Otherwise, gymnasts may have problems with their knees and feet. Working at the bar is important to make the feet work and do exercises at quick tempo. Quick technique influences jumps and other elements.
As a result, gymnasts can start combining classical movements, which allow the body to relax and help to dance, and gymnastics movements. These movements will later be done on the carpet, when gymnasts can start controlling their bodies and using apparatus simultaneously.

With a Bachelor of arts degree in Fine Arts and MA degree in Education and Professional Dancers’ Teaching diploma from the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Zeynep Taner has 24 years of experience in teaching. She owns one of the largest ballet schools in Turkey and she is the head of RAD program of all 11 participating schools.
In May 2010, Zeynep became the World Champion in World Dance Olympics organized by the International Dance Organization in the Contemporary Dance Adult Duet category. She also holds responsibilities as a judge of Performing Arts of the same organization.
Zeynep currently resides in United Kingdom and works with rhythmic gymnasts as a holder of the Club Judge Certificate in rhythmic gymnastics. She works with elite squad members of national team as well as recreational groups. She is responsible for running the daily operations of the school, overseeing the communications between parents, students and instructors in addition to organizing year-end shows with over 500 pupils every year.
As a RAD registered instructor, she ensures readiness of students for their exams, supports other instructors of TS Academy and monitors the development of all TSA students for the RAD exams.
Zeynep’s students won numerous medals at international dance competitions in ballet, jazz and contemporary dances. While Zeynep maintains her responsibilities as a school owner and instructor, she is currently working on obtaining her PhD degree in education as well.
